IP Arbitration Forum

A global hub within the Innovation Policy Network that advances rigorous research and practical insight on how arbitration serves intellectual property (IP) and coordinates the community that studies and uses it.

The IP Arbitration Forum is a new initiative of the Innovation Policy Network dedicated to improving understanding and practice of arbitration for IP disputes. The Forum convenes academics, practitioners, arbitral institutions, in‑house counsel, and policymakers to generate evidence‑based insights and coordinate research across jurisdictions and industries. We map legal frameworks and market practice, build comparative datasets, analyze case trends, and develop tools such as model clauses and best‑practice guidance. Through working groups, public briefs, and curated events, the Forum connects research to real‑world decision‑making, helping parties design better dispute resolution clauses, tribunals run more effective proceedings, and policymakers evaluate reform. Our goal is a more transparent, efficient, and trusted IP arbitration ecosystem that supports innovation and cross‑border technology exchange.

Our work centers on six pillars:

  • Comparative law & policy mapping (arbitrability, public‑policy limits, interim measures, award enforcement).
  • Empirical & qualitative research (cost, duration, settlement rates, tribunal composition, disclosure, and confidentiality).
  • Clause design & best practices (model clauses for licensing, SEPs/FRAND, R&D collaborations, and joint ventures).
  • Sector‑specific tracks (health sciences, AI/data, creative industries).
  • Education & capacity building (briefings, primers, and practitioner toolkits).
  • Community convenings (roundtables, workshops, and annual colloquia).
