Matthias C Brickel is a Director and Research Fellow at the Innovation Policy Network. He leads the Start-up and Entrepreneurship Hub and the Cybersecurity and Quantum Technologies Hub. His work focuses on innovation, emerging technologies and collaboration between industry, government and academia.

Matthias is a commercial strategy and innovation leader with experience across deep technology, finance and entrepreneurship. He has held senior strategy and operations responsibilities in venture-backed technology, covering commercialisation, growth and strategic partnerships. Earlier in his career, he worked in investment banking in London, specialising in equity capital markets and contributing to major European transactions. His broader experience includes
venture development and the evaluation of high-growth technology businesses.

At the University of Oxford, Matthias conducted research on international political economy, security and institutional development. His research involved engagement with senior policymakers, national security advisors, government ministries, think tanks, international organisations and civil society leaders, and was presented at international academic conferences.

He has delivered guest lectures on political economy, technology, artificial intelligence and investing, advised startups and innovation initiatives, and spoken at international conferences on technology and cybersecurity. He has been a member of the World Economic Forum Global Shapers Community since 2021 and has held leadership roles within its Oxford Hub.
Matthias holds an MPhil from the University of Oxford. Prior to Oxford, he studied business, finance, and economics in Germany, the United States, Mexico and Argentina.
